If you are like me who understands the value of comedies, then you will always look forward to comedy shows especially on Netflix. Believe me, when I tell you not all comedies are born equal. I have seen some shitty comedy shows that probably left me more depressed than they found me. I decided to go down memory lane to write down some of my all-time best comedies ever shown on Netflix. Below are my best collections.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
This romantic comedy produced by Judd Apatow describes the response of Peter Bretter played by Jason Segel after he had his heart broken by his ex-girlfriend Sarah Marshall played by Kristen Bell. Things take a turn when his attempt to get away and forget Sarah, he goes on a vacation to forget his sorrows in a resort where ironically Sarah also was, except that she came with her new boyfriend.
I still have a grim on my face when I recall the embarrassment on my parents face when they took my brother and I, to watch the movie and after a couple of minutes, a dripping wet, naked Jason Segel is shown on the screen then followed by some explosive sexual moments. Besides those embarrassing moments at that time, the movie lived up to being one of the most humorous movies of all time.
I Love You, Man
If you are one of those who use movie titles to judge a movie, I can guess that you would be wrong on this one. I Love You, Man is perhaps one of the most hilarious movies in its category. The part of the movie that I always find very funny is the way Peter Klaven and Zooey met.
It is a light-hearted movie has a way of making the watcher feel good. The comedy is a lot more intelligent than how it looks on the surface.
Peter Klaven played by Paul Rudd, is a successful real estate agent who just got engaged to the woman of his dreams, Zooey (Rashida Jones) discovers, to his shock and chagrin, that he has no real male friend he could use as his Best Man. Something about this movie makes it look like dating is easier than finding friends. While that can be contestable, what I do not contest is this movie being absolutely hilarious.
This movie can be described as a true masterpiece of dark comedies remarked as one of the best holiday movies ever acted by some enthusiast. Although this hilarious movie contains a high measure of profane languages, it can still easily be described as one of the best comedies ever made.
I love it not just being its hilarious script but also the plot that makes it stand out overall it’s an awesome film with a feel good feeling every time I watch it.
With an amazing show by Billy Bob Thornton and such brilliant supporting roles from two late movie greats; John Ritter and Bernie Ma, the performances can only be described as sterling and can keep you laughing from start to finish.
Another fascinating and hilarious movie I have watched on Netflix is Finding Dory. Another amusing, moving and intriguing animated movie from Pixar, known for their great voice acting and fantastic CGIs, although I do not find this sequel might not be as great as the original, it remains a well-told story that inspires self-discovery and acceptance. This film has many funny and witty lines and awesome gags which make this comedy a traditional film. I find the Dory, with her friends Nemo and Marlin particularly interesting.
Meet the Parents is another hilarious movie on Netflix. Meeting one’s in-law is usually a tensed moment and so it was for Ben Stiller who plays the role of an ‘accident waiting to happen’ nurse Greg Focker. Now ready to marry his girlfriend, but first he must impress his girl friend’s humorless and suspicious dad who is an ex- CIA agent. The cat and mouse game played by the duo is an integral part of what makes the movie an interesting one to watch.
This female-led crime comedy is directed by Callie Khouri, an Academy Award-winning screenwriter. In this movie, Bridget Cardigan comes up with a plan to steal the old worn out money that was being shredded at Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.
It is a hilarious movie bound to keep you spellbound throughout the duration of the movie.
Mac and Devin Go to High School
When rappers Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dogg decide to make it real in their hilarious movie, they capture the comical moments that can occur in a high school with a lot of intrigues and interesting moments that will hold you spellbound throughout. It’s lighthearted and funny whilst handling topics like friendship and loyalty.
Hard Knock Wife
If there is one movie that really got me laughing so hard, it has got to be Hard-Knock-Wife. A sequel to Baby Cobra, where she had a perspective about family life very different from the one she has on Hard-Knock-Wife where she had now become a wife and a mum.
The two movies qualify as Netflix Stand-up Specials.
Tucker & Dale vs. Evil
Produced by Eli Craig, this is arguably one of the most is an interesting hilariously gory, good-spirited horror comedies in recent times. This movie portrays that not all hillbillies (starring Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine) are killers, the two hillbillies find themselves involved in a situation where staying alive and doing the right thing at the same time is difficult.
The 40-Year-Old Virgin
Not many movies can hold up after several viewings but “The 40-Year-Old-Virgin” is a must watch movie that fits the bill anytime. You never can tell what next will make you laugh only to realize after watching the movie that you probably had laugh throughout the duration of the movie. Every man can relate to the scene where Andy runs away from work after the guys made fun of him.
This movie might tempt you to have a bouncer in your wedding. Wilson and Vaughn figured out the fastest way to score with elegant women was at weddings. So, they personally invite themselves to the parties then personally invite the ladies over. It was going pretty well until they got too personal with two bridesmaids.
From the director of Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, Little Evil is another horror comedy. When Adam Scott got married to his new bride, he had to also take in her weird son with supernatural abilities, who seems to have demons controlling him.
Produced exclusively for Netflix, this comedy will hold you spellbound. It is however not for the faint hearted especially at that moment when he convinced his science teacher to commit suicide.
HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS
It was a 10 day challenge for Andie and Ben. Andie placed a bet with her magazine editor to win over a guy’s love then have him dump her in 10 days. She had to make every mistake girls make to get a guy to dump her. On the other hand, Ben placed a bet with his boss to get a girl to fall in love with him in 10 days. He had an idea to see him through. They meet and fall in love, while we count down to day 10.
Will Smith plays Alex the love doctor who is a professional date consultant majored in educating whoever needs to know all there is to women and how to date them, then sends you on a date. He’s the typical go-to guy on female matters who always ironically have their own love life in shambles. So while he works on Fat Albert and rich Allegra, he has his columnist, Sara, to deal with.
Don’t Think Twice
Starring Keegan-Michael Key, Gillian Jacobs, Chris Gethard, Tami Sagher, Kate Micucci and Birbiglia, this is a hilarious comedy provides an insightful meditation on funny friends as they hang out. It is a story of friendship, failure, success, aspirations and human experiences.
It takes a hilarious, insightful and unbiased look at the never before seen private lives of professionals who are funny. My memorable moment of that movie was the positive talk by Jessica as she reminds herself what she’s really worth when she said “I’m pretty, I’m smart, I’m strong, I’m a cocoa queen”
Preparing for a wedding is always a tensed moment, it was in an attempt to ease that tension that the bride’s three best friends from high school and bridesmaids - Regan, Gena, and Katie, decided to come together to celebrate the impending matrimony of their friend Becky Archer played by Rebel Wilson. There are individual moments which are very funny.
Far from being easing that tension, things turned for the worse when what was supposed to be a joke ended up with the wedding gown getting torn.
I still remember my horror the first time I watched the moment when the gown got torn, no bride would want that to happen to her in real life.
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World
In spite of the doomsday fear because of an earthbound asteroid, director Lorene Scafaria was able to turn what was supposed to be a doomsday firm into a comical movie. Steve Carell and Keira Knightley are two neighbors who find themselves supporting each other on a road trip in the final few days of the Earth in a most amazing, hilarious and comical way.
You can’t help laughing through the tensed moments of the impending doomsday.
13 Going on 30
When Jennifer Garner playing the role of Jenna Rink made a wish she didn’t anticipate that it would magically happen in the way that it did. A hilarious movie with twist and turns brings out a nostalgic feeling for those who lived in the 80s and for those who are curious about those who lived in those times. It is a must watch for all lovers of magical moments immersed in comedy.
Bring It On
This movie stands tall in the world of teen’s comedies. Highly motivational, inspiring and hilarious this is a movie you can comfortably allow your kids to watch.
It brings the determination of team captain Torrance Shipman to succeed amidst all obstacles and somehow manages to be funny in the supposedly serious process of succeeding in the face of impending failure.
Paddington is a hilarious action animated comedy film starring Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, and Jim Broadbent among other actors. Since its release, it has been smashing records. It is the story of a young Peruvian bear who decides to search for a new home travels to London and becomes lost and alone at Paddington Station, where he encounters the kind Brown family, who agree to offer him a temporary abode. With an impeccable CGI, this movie cuts it as one of the great movies available on TV.
One of the classics from the Coen brothers, this movie is a unique comedy with a high capacity to thrill the audience. The movie shows CIA analyst Osbourne Cox played by George Clooney deciding to write a memoir after his life seems to have been falling apart.
This movie has all the originality, witty and humorous moments you would expect from an average Coens comedy.
